What to look for

Rodent activity can leave more than one clue. CDC guidance identifies droppings and gnaw marks as signs to look for. You may also notice damaged food packages, nesting material, tracks, or sounds in a wall or ceiling.

A sign does not identify the species or show exactly where an animal entered. Note the room, date, and whether signs return after cleanup.

  • Droppings or fresh gnaw marks
  • Shredded paper or other nesting material
  • Repeated activity along sheltered edges or near stored food

Reduce what attracts rodents

Keep food and waste in closed containers, reduce accessible water, and remove clutter that can provide shelter. When safe, note possible openings around utility lines, doors, and storage areas.

Mice may look for shelter indoors as outdoor conditions cool, but rodent activity can happen at any time of year.

Clean up carefully

Do not sweep or vacuum dry rodent droppings. CDC provides step-by-step cleanup instructions and recommends added precautions for heavy infestations. Read current public-health guidance before handling droppings or nesting material.

When to request help

If signs keep appearing, if you cannot locate their source, or if the area is heavily affected, describe what you have seen and where it occurs. Our request form accepts mice or rats as a concern; we can review the request and confirm availability.
