Ant activity has more than one possible source
Ants commonly forage in and around homes. A trail may connect a food or water source to a nest, but seeing workers indoors does not prove that the nest is inside the building.
Species differ in nesting habits and food preferences. Identification is useful because the best next step depends on what kind of ant is present and where it is nesting.
What to note
Take a clear photo if you can do so without handling the insects. Clean food residue and store food in closed containers while you observe the route.
- Where the trail begins, ends, or disappears
- Whether ants appear near moisture, food, a window, or a utility opening
- Whether the ants are all similar in size or include larger or winged insects
Choose a careful next step
Avoid relying on a generic spray to solve every ant problem. Some species have different nesting sites and feeding behaviors, and a product can be unsafe if used in the wrong place. If you use any product, follow its label.
